Alexis Kai Hon LAU: Professor Alexis Lau is the Director of Institute for the Environment, Head and Chair Professor of Division of Environment and Sustainability, and Chair Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at HKUST. His research specializes in Air Quality, Health Exposure, Weather and Climate, and his techniques include analysis of large-scale geophysical datasets, numerical models, and in-situ and satellite remote sensing. He has published over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and served on a number of green groups as well as many government committees in Hong Kong. Internationally, he is member of the Scientific Advisory Group of the World Health Organization Panel on the development of a Global Platform on Air Quality and Health.
Dongyu Liu: Dongyu Liu is an Assistant Professor of computer science at the University of California at Davis, where he directs the Visualization and Intelligence Augmentation (VIA) research group. His research lies at the intersection of Machine Learning (ML), Visualization (VIS), and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). He designs and develops visualization-empowered human-AI teaming systems to augment human intelligence for data-driven decision-making, by innovating at two fundamental building blocks: human-centered AI and human-AI interfaces. The central theme driving his research is the pursuit of “big data, intelligent algorithms, intuitive interfaces” to bridge data gaps, making the data-to-decision process more efficient, effective, and trustworthy in critical domains such as sustainability and healthcare. The ultimate goal is to catalyze solutions to pressing challenges in these areas so as to improve the quality of human life and the environment.
Marcus LEUNG-SHEA: Mr. Marcus LEUNG-SHEA is the Acting Director of Sustainability/Net-Zero Office at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He provides leadership for HKUST’s Net-Zero 2045 initiatives, focusing on decarbonisation strategies, adoption of green technologies, and exploring and implementing new-step change initiatives to make sustainability a practical reality on HKUST’s campus. His experience ranges across management consulting, corporate strategy, and entrepreneurship, with a focus on systems thinking and digital transformation. Marcus holds a B.A. in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, a Master’s in Healthcare Administration from George Mason University, and an MBA from HKUST.
Stephen Ng: Dr Stephen Ng is currently Acting Head of Climate Action at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development Office. He oversees the operations of the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change, and curates exhibitions to raise public awareness of climate change and promote community education on sustainability.
Joon Nak Choi: Joon Nak CHOI (JC) is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Management, an advisor to the MSc in Business Analytics Program, Department of Information Systems, Business Statistics, and Operations Management, and a Faculty Associate at the Institute for Emerging Market Studies at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He has also held professorships at Stanford University and NYU Shanghai. At HKUST, he serves on the Task Force on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence and formerly led the Subcommittee on Incubation and Funding within the Task Force on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. He is an Expert Delegate in AI to the Digital Education Council. Professor Choi graduated from Brown University with an AB in International Relations, Urban Studies, and Economics and earned an MA and PhD in Sociology from Stanford. His research focuses on the intersection of business and technology, including AI, data science, and business analytics. His research has been published in academic outlets including Stanford University Press, Routledge, and the American Journal of Sociology as well as newspapers of record including the South China Morning Post and Maeil Kyungjae Daily; his work has also been cited in the MIT Technology Review and Sina.com in addition to the South China Morning Post. He is involved with various professional committees and has been a speaker at numerous industry events. Choi has significant entrepreneurial experience, having been Chief Data Scientist for AssertID, co-founder of Zectr, and founder of Learnovate, a HKUST spinoff applying AI to education.
Xiao Hu: Xiao Hu is an Associate Professor in the Human Communication, Development, and Information Science (CDIS) Academic Unit at the Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong. Her research focuses on applying data mining and machine learning to information, education, and culture, including big data in education, learning analytics, teachable AI, music information retrieval, affective computing, and social data science. She directs the Bachelor of Arts and Science (BASc) in Social Data Science program and leads research projects funded by the Research Grant Council of Hong Kong and the National Science Foundation of China. She co-investigates the RGC-funded project "Learning and Assessment for Digital Citizenship" and a Hong Kong Jockey Club-funded intergenerational learning project. Dr. Hu has received multiple international conference awards and a UGC team teaching award (2019). She co-chairs the Big Data in Education and Learning Analytics track at the IEEE ICALT (2021, 2022) and has served on the boards of ISMIR (2011-2017) and SICET (2018-2021). She is on the editorial boards of five international journals and has been a visiting scholar at several institutions, including UC San Diego, Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná, Syracuse University, Academia Sinica, and the National Institute of Informatics, Japan. Dr. Hu holds a PhD in Library and Information Science, a Multi-disciplinary Certificate in Language and Speech Processing, and a Master's in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a Master's in Electrical Engineering from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, and a Bachelor's in Electronics and Information Systems from Wuhan University.
Yanjie Song: Yanjie Song (PhD HKU; MEd Leeds, UK) is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Information Technology and Associate Director of Centre for Immersive Learning and Metaverse in Education (CILME). Her research interests include augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial intelligence (AI) and metaverse in education, multimodal learning analytics (MMLA), and innovative pedagogy designs. She was successful in leading her team to develop a few award-winning apps. Her team’s recent development of the metaverse platform – ‘Learningverse’ won ‘Bronze Medal’ at Geneva Inventions (2023) in Switzerland, and ‘Silver Medal’ and ‘Excellence in Innovation Award’ at the International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN) (2023).
Shihui Feng: Shihui Feng is an assistant professor at the Academic Unit of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, Faculty of Education, at The University of Hong Kong. Her research interests are in complex networks, learning analytics, and AI in education. Specifically her current research projects funded by the RGC and Public Policy Research (PPR) Funding Scheme focus on developing computational and network-based approaches for analyzing and supporting collaborative learning processes, as well as investigating the multi-level network effects on STEAM education.
