Topic: Seeking Patterns of Visual Pattern Discovery for Knowledge Building

Time: Jun. 16, 2022 19:00-20:30 (China Standard Time)

Abstract: Currently, the methodological and technical developments in visual analytics, as well as the existing theories, are not sufficiently grounded by empirical studies that can provide an understanding of the processes of visual data analysis, analytical reasoning and derivation of new knowledge by humans. We conducted an exploratory empirical study in which participants analysed complex and data-rich visualisations by detecting salient visual patterns, translating them into conceptual information structures and reasoning about those structures to construct an overall understanding of the analysis subject. Eye tracking and voice recording were used to capture this process. We analysed how the data we had collected match several existing theoretical models intended to describe visualisation-supported reasoning, knowledge building, decision making or use and development of mental models.

Speaker Bio: Natalia Andrienko is a lead scientist at Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems and part-time professor at City University London. Results of her research have been published in two monographs, ”Exploratory Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Data: a Systematic Approach” (2006) and ”Visual Analytics of Movement” (2013). She is editorial board member of International Journal of Geographical Information Science and International Journal of Cartography. Natalia Andrienko received test of time award at IEEE VAST 2018, best paper awards at AGILE 2006, IEEE VAST 2011 and 2012, and EuroVis 2015 conferences and EuroVA 2018 and 2019 workshops, honorable mention awards at IEEE VAST 2010 conference, VAST challenge awards 2008 and 2014, and best poster awards at AGILE 2007 and 2018, ACM GIS 2011 and IEEE VAST 2016 conferences.

    About CSIG-VIS

The China Society of Image and Graphics, Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics (CSIG-VIS) is the first technical committee on visualization and visual analytics in China. The technical committee aims to develop a communication platform for stakeholders in academia and industry, to discuss the trends and opportunities in the era of big data, to promote the discipline development and talent cultivation, to push forward the research and applications in the related disciplines, and ultimately to build a sustainable ecosystem involving industry, universities, and other research institutes. The technical committee, officially established on December 23, 2017, already attracts more than 100 members from various affiliations, including domestic and international universities and companies.

About The CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series

The CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series, launched by the China Society of Image and Graphics, Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics, invites renowned experts to share their visions of the research trends and latest progress in visualization. These biweekly lectures are conducted in Thursday, and please refer to http://chinavis.org /lectures/english/index_en.html for details.
