CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series 18
Prof. Ivan Viola | Volume Visualization for Cryo-Electron Tomography

    Speaker: Prof. Ivan Viola

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia.

Topic: Volume Visualization for Cryo-Electron Tomography

Time: Jun. 2, 2022 19:00-20:30 (China Standard Time)

Abstract: Recently a new microscopy modality, Cryo-Electron Tomography (cryo-ET), has been introduced and is increasingly gaining popularity. The main idea is to image the flash-frozen specimen from varying viewing angles so that a three-dimensional volume can be reconstructed. Our long-term vision is to create a pipeline where biologists can effortlessly transform the imaged specimen representation into a mesoscale model containing atomistic detail. In my talk, I will present our recent progress towards the long-term vision: optimization-based tomographic reconstruction techniques for cryo-ET, new methods for optimization-based denoising based on differentiable microscopy simulation, and an approach for automatic interpretation of cryo-ET data using deep learning approach. I will conclude by demonstrating our volume rendering technique suing a WebGPU-based rendering, accessible on the web for everyone.

Speaker Bio: Ivan Viola is a Professor at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia. He graduated from TU Wien, Austria, and in 2005 he took a postdoc position at the University of Bergen, Norway, where he was gradually promoted to the professor rank. In 2013 he received a WWTF grant to establish a research group at TU Wien. At KAUST, he continues developing new technologies that make visual, in-silico life at the nanoscale possible. Viola co-founded the Nanographics startup to commercialize nanovisualization technologies.

    About CSIG-VIS

The China Society of Image and Graphics, Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics (CSIG-VIS) is the first technical committee on visualization and visual analytics in China. The technical committee aims to develop a communication platform for stakeholders in academia and industry, to discuss the trends and opportunities in the era of big data, to promote the discipline development and talent cultivation, to push forward the research and applications in the related disciplines, and ultimately to build a sustainable ecosystem involving industry, universities, and other research institutes. The technical committee, officially established on December 23, 2017, already attracts more than 100 members from various affiliations, including domestic and international universities and companies.

About The CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series

The CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series, launched by the China Society of Image and Graphics, Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics, invites renowned experts to share their visions of the research trends and latest progress in visualization. These biweekly lectures are conducted in Thursday, and please refer to http://chinavis.org /lectures/english/index_en.html for details.
