Topic: From Utilitarian to Sublime - The Exploration in Representing Data

Abstract: If visualization is utilitarian, art is sublime, then where should artistic visualization land? What does artistic practice contribute to the field of visualization? Should we concern about whether such works are pretty or user-friendly? Through discussing some of current practices in this highly fluctuate field and a few of her recent projects, Rebecca Xu shares her thoughts on the aforementioned questions, commenting on the role of artistic visualization in exploring innovative ways of representing information.

Speaker Bio: Rebecca Ruige Xu currently teaches computer art as a Professor in College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University. Her artwork and research interests include artistic data visualization, experimental animation, visual music, interactive installations, digital performance, and virtual reality. Her recent work has appeared at: IEEE VIS Arts Program; SIGGRAPH & SIGGRAPH Asia Art Gallery; ISEA; Ars Electronica; Museum of Contemporary Art, Italy; Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, USA; FILE– Electronic Language International Festival, Brazil; Techfest -Technical Arts Exhibition, India; Colloquium culture and digitization, Switzerland; CYNETart, Germany; International Digital Art Exhibition, China. Xu served on the Media Arts Advisory Panel for the U.S. National Endowment for the Arts. She was the co-founder of ChinaVIS Conference Arts Program and the Co-Chair of 2019, 2020 IEEE PacificVIS Visual Storytelling Contest. Currently Xu is the Exhibition Chair of 2021 IEEE VIS Arts Program, and serves on the Executive Committee for the Association of Chinese Artists in American Academia.

Session Chair Bio: Chongke Bi, received the B.Sc. (Eng.) and M.Sc. (Eng.) degrees from Shandong University, China, in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and the Ph.D. (Sci.) degree from The University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2012. From 2012 to 2016, he was a Researcher with RIKEN, Japan, where he focused on the research in the field of visual analysis of large-scale simulation on super-computer. He is currently an associate professor in the college of intelligence and computing, Tianjin University. His current research interests include scientific visualization and high performance computing.
