CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series 4
Prof. Eduard Gröller | Visual Analysis through Spatial and Abstract Data Integration

Speaker: Prof. Eduard Gröller

Vienna University of Technology, Austria

Topic: Visual Analysis through Spatial and Abstract Data Integration

Time: Nov. 4, 2021 19:00-20:30 (China Standard Time)

Abstract: Analysts of various domains, like urban planning, civil engineering, and disaster management, deal with complex spatial and geometric data that also contain multivariate attributes. Typical analysis tasks involve the (abstract) attribute data and also the localization and understanding of shapes, their spatial relations, and the surrounding geometry. The talk explores various visual integration approaches that go beyond coordinated multiple views. Spatial and abstract data are visually tightly integrated to provide a seamless iterative analysis loop. Some example applications will be discussed in detail. These include: tunnel inspection and documentation to reveal patterns in tunnel crack data; quantitative and qualitative evaluation and comparison of visibility data of candidate buildings with respect to a large number of viewpoints; interactive correlation panels for the geological analysis of digital outcrop models to support stratigraphic analyses; integrated visualization for simulation-based decision support in lighting design of interiors. The case studies demonstrate that the close combination of visual representations from multi-faceted data is a crucial aspect in the emerging field of immersive analytics.

Speaker Bio: Eduard Gröller is Professor at the Institute of Visual Computing & Human-Centered Technology (VC&HCT), TU Wien, where he is heading the Research Unit of Computer Graphics. He is a scientific proponent and key researcher of the VRVis research center. The center performs applied research in visualization, rendering, and visual analysis. Dr. Gröller is Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the University of Bergen, Norway. His research interests include computer graphics, visualization, and visual computing. He became a fellow of the Eurographics Association in 2009. Dr. Gröller is the recipient of the Eurographics 2015 Outstanding Technical Contributions Award and of the IEEE VGTC 2019 Technical Achievement Award.

About CSIG-VIS

The China Society of Image and Graphics, Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics (CSIG-VIS) is the first technical committee on visualization and visual analytics in China. The technical committee aims to develop a communication platform for stakeholders in academia and industry, to discuss the trends and opportunities in the era of big data, to promote the discipline development and talent cultivation, to push forward the research and applications in the related disciplines, and ultimately to build a sustainable ecosystem involving industry, universities, and other research institutes. The technical committee, officially established on December 23, 2017, already attracts more than 100 members from various affiliations, including domestic and international universities and companies.

About The CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series

The CSIG-VIS International Lecture Series, launched by the China Society of Image and Graphics, Technical Committee on Visualization and Visual Analytics, invites renowned experts to share their visions of the research trends and latest progress in visualization. These biweekly lectures are conducted in Thursday, and please refer to http://chinavis.org /lectures/english/index_en.html for details.
